What Is INTERLUDE? An Immersive Sound and Light Experience in Riga

INTERLUDE is an immersive sound and light experience in Riga, created inside the historic Riga Reformed Church in the heart of Old Town Riga. It combines original music, visual art, high-resolution projections and historic architecture in a 30-minute audiovisual experience.

But INTERLUDE is not a traditional light show or an exhibition of moving paintings. Everything you see and hear has been created specifically for the experience, bringing together music, visual art and the unique architecture of the space.

An Immersive Experience in Old Town Riga

INTERLUDE takes place inside Riga Reformed Church. During the show, projections transform the interior of the church and move across its walls and architectural details. There is no traditional stage or screens to watch – the visuals appear throughout the space while music surrounds the audience.

The architecture is not simply a backdrop. It becomes part of the experience itself.

The show itself lasts approximately 30 minutes, but we recommend allowing around 45 minutes for your visit. We invite you to arrive at least 10 – 15 minutes before the show begins, giving yourself time to settle in, experience the atmosphere of the historic space and prepare for what follows. There is no need to rush out when the show ends either. Many visitors choose to stay for a while, take in the space and reflect on the experience before continuing with their day.

Original Music and Visual Art

INTERLUDE was created in Latvia by a team of around 100 people working across music, visual art, sound, technology and production.

At the heart of the experience is Mass, a sacred composition by Latvian composer and guitarist Kaspars Zemītis, performed together with the State Choir LATVIJA.

While the music has sacred roots, within INTERLUDE its meaning is left open to each visitor. The experience does not ask you to follow one particular interpretation. It creates a moment to slow down, reflect and take from the story what feels meaningful to you.

The visual world of INTERLUDE was created by artist Māris Kalve. All visual content was developed specifically for the experience, combining original digital art with specially filmed performances.

Rather than adapting existing paintings or artworks into an immersive exhibition, INTERLUDE brings original music and original visual art together as one story, created to work within the architecture of Riga Reformed Church.

More Than a Light Show

Calling INTERLUDE a light show is perhaps the simplest way to describe it, but light is only one part of the experience.

Music, projections, visual art and architecture work together to tell a story around the audience. Instead of moving between installations or watching a performance on a stage, visitors remain inside the church as the space changes around them.

INTERLUDE is also not designed around sensory overload. Its pace gives you time to watch, listen and simply experience the moment.

There is no single way you are expected to interpret what you see. For some, INTERLUDE is about music and art. For others, it is a chance to slow down for half an hour in the middle of a busy day in Riga.
